Stu Phillips (composer)

Stuart ' Stu ' Phillips ( born September 9, 1929) is an American film and television composer.

Life

Phillips studied music at the High School of Music and Art in New York City and at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. After that, he was an A & R manager at Colpix Records, where he was responsible, among other things, James Darren and Nina Simone. He switched to Capitol Records, where he produced the Easy Listening Studio Orchestra Hollyridge Strings, and finally to Epic Records. From the 1960s he composed music for several feature films, including Valley of the Dolls by Russ Meyer. From the mid- 1970s, he worked for Universal Studios, and composed the theme songs for some of their television series of the seventies and eighties, including Knight Rider, Battlestar Galactica, and Quincy. He worked closely with producer Glen A. Larson together, with whom he joined in the early 1980s to FOX, where he composed, among others, for a Fall Guy and Automan. He was nominated for a Grammy in 1979 and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
