Šuňava

Šuňava ( German Schoenau, Hungarian Szépfalu ) is a town in eastern Slovakia, with 1933 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It belongs to Okres Poprad, which is a part of the overall district Prešov Region.

Geography

The municipality is located in the basin Podtatranská kotlina (sub - Tatra boiler) at the foot of the mountain range Kozie chrbty. Through the village the watershed between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea runs. Šuňava is situated 18 kilometers from Poprad.

Administratively divided the community into districts Nižná Šuňava ( German low -Schönau ) and Vyšná Šuňava ( German upper -Schönau ).

History

The municipality was created on 1 January 1974 by merging the previously separate places Nižná Šuňava and Vyšná Šuňava.

Vyšná Šuňava emerged earlier and for the first time in 1298 as a villa Sonav ( Schonaw ) mentioned in writing.
