Surfer Rosa is the first studio album by the American indie rock band Pixies. It was published on 21 March 1988 4AD.
Style and Aftermath
Surfer Rosa set a counterpoint to the then successful genres glam metal and sleaze rock and inspired with the native appearance of the band, the then new high / low volume change between verse and chorus, and Black Francis ' idiosyncratic singing numerous other musicians. Another special feature is the shortness of the tracks from partially under two minutes and produced by Steve Albini the " drum sound, which sets standards in its force to this day ." The Music Express called the band therefore " the most influential rock band of their generation."
Kurt Cobain, lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana, said in reference to the 1991 published Nirvana album Nevermind: " Basically, I was just trying to imitate the Pixies. " Even other successful indie rock bands of the 90's ( Pavement, Radiohead ) and 2000s ( Arcade Fire, the Strokes, the White Stripes ) are inspired by the Pixies and call them as an important influence.
In a list of the best albums of the 80s by Pitchfork Media, the album shows up in 7th place, in a similar list of the Music Express at # 2 in the German edition of the 500 best albums of all time according to Rolling Stone, the album reaches number 59, it is also part of the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In the list of 150 albums for the eternity of Visions magazine, it is ranked 75th
The band called Hüsker Dü, Peter Paul and Mary, Rush, Jimi Hendrix, The Velvet Underground and The Beach Boys as a performer, from which they were significantly influenced.
The album did not make it into the album charts, but later reached gold status in the USA.
Use and cover versions
Where Is My Mind? became known to a wider audience through the use of in David Fincher film Fight Club. David Bowie coverte the song Cactus, M.I.A. samplete Where Is My Mind? in her song $ 20.
