Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works

The Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM ) was a Swiss company of heavy industry based in Winterthur. After removal of the locomotive engineering ( 2000), the company was renamed Winpro and adopted by Stadler Rail 2005.

History

The company was founded in 1871 in Winterthur by Charles Brown. First business successes came with Zahnradlokomotiven, soon also with a Tramways. Around 1890 SLM was the largest Swiss Locomotive manufacturers. With various manufacturers, such as Brown, Boveri & Cie. , The Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon and the Société Anonyme des Ateliers de Sécheron cooperation for the construction of distributed early in the Switzerland electric locomotives emerged, with SLM supplied the chassis and superstructure.

In Switzerland, they went through the Mitfabrikation successful SBB locomotives as Ae 3/6 I, Ae 4/7, Re 4 /4 I, Ae 4 /4, Ae 6 /6, Re 4 /4 II, BLS Re 4 / 4, Re 6 /6, Re 450, Re 460 and Re 465 a name. Thanks to the latter building construction they also won tenders from Norway, Finland and Hong Kong.

In addition to the locomotive there were also departments for engines, tractors and pumps. After the merger with Sulzer in 1961, this area of production was stopped, however.

The first locomotive that leaves the factory to the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, was built in 1873 No. 7 of the Vitznau- Rigi -Bahn. A peculiarity of the No. 7 was the built- standing boilers. This so that the heating pipes have been completely surrounded and at angle of water in order to minimize the risk of explosion of the boiler. The No. 7 was scrapped in 1937. It is now exhibited in the Museum of Transport in Lucerne Switzerland and is occasionally put on anniversaries back into circulation.

Change of name

1998 SLM was renamed in Sulzer AG Winpro and the workforce, up to a strain of 350 employees laid off. Furthermore, the product range gear trains was sold to Stadler Rail, engineering via the detour via Adtranz to Bombardier Transportation. After a management buy -out in 2001, the AG was founded Winpro who became involved in the field of automotive, rail vehicles, and system engineering. On 7 September 2005 Winpro was taken over completely by Stadler Rail.

Already in mid- 2000, the steam locomotive technology from the SLM was relocated and become independent as a steam locomotive and Maschinenfabrik DLM.

The metrology department ( in the SLM founded as a physics laboratory ), was acquired in October 2001 by the PROSE and since then offers testing of rail vehicles throughout Europe.
