The monastery Szentgotthárd ( Sanctus Gotthardus ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the town of Szentgotthárd in Vas county in southwest Hungary, around 3 km from the border with Austria and 18 km from the border with Slovenia.

History

The monastery was founded in 1183 by King Bela III. donated. As a daughter house of the Abbey of Trois -Fontaines, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Abbey Primary. 1198 gave a priest from the monastery Güssing a vineyard in Saint Brunn. The medieval system of 1532 repealed the monastery in 1605 blasted by the Austrian Captain Wolfgang von Tieffenbach. Upon her return in 1734, the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz built in the years 1748-1764 under the direction of Abbot Robert Leeb today's church with a richly articulated facade designed by Franz Anton Pilgram. The place Jenner village was until 1848 owned by the monastery.

The Abbot of Holy Cross was until 1878 in charge of the monastery, the last one held the position in Szentgotthard, Edmund Komáromy was. In 1878 the monastery was placed under the supervision of the Cistercians of Zirc. During the communist resolutions monastery in Hungary the monastery was dissolved in 1950 Szentgotthárd.

Buildings and plant

The baroque church was frescoed in 1784 by Stephan Dorffmeister.
