Holy Brunn is a municipality with 816 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Güssing in Burgenland in Austria.

The Hungarian name of the village is Szentkút, the Croatian Šeskut.

Geography

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland. Places ( and cadastral ) of the community are (in brackets population as at 31 October 2011):

  • German Bieling (96, area 546 ha),
  • Hagen im Burgenland (236, area 987 ha),
  • Holy Brunn (252, area 804 ha),
  • Luising (85, surface area 270 ha) and
  • Reinersdorf ( kroat. ZAMAR ) (172, area 741 ha).

History

The first written mention of the village by the " Holy Well" comes from the year 1198th In the 12th century, a priest from Güssing presented the monastery Szentgotthárd a vineyard in Saint Brunn. The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Szentkút. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). The cadastral Luising was only on 10 January 1923 assigned by Allied Boundary Commission of the Republic of Austria and occupied by Austrian troops.

Culture and sights

  • Hermitage hl. Ulrich
  • Famous is the holy wine cellar district, where 120 wine cellar from the 17th and 18th centuries are. About 50 of them are still covered with straw. It is a landscape protection area
  • It is also known Ulrich source that is already mentioned in 1198 in a deed of the Cistercians. The water is said to have various medicinal effects, the well-known ophthalmologist Ladislaus Batthyány - Strattmann used the water for relief of eye disease.
