Steger Bach is a market town in the district of Güssing in Burgenland in Austria. The Hungarian name of the village is Szentelek, the Croatian Santalek.

Geography

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland in Stremtal. Steger Bach is the only place in the community.

History

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Szentelek. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). Market town is Stegersbach since 1583 ( by Rudolf II in 1391, again in 1583 awarded ).

As in many other places in Burgenland Croatian colonists were also in Steger Bach in the 16th century settled ( Croatian Steger Bach), where the proportions of the German and Croats - as in the places Antau ( Otava ), Kittsee ( Gijeca ) and Sigleß ( Cikleš ) - always in the past held in the balance. Since the end of the 19th century, the proportion of Croats takes but steadily, so that today only - if at all - very few residents can be counted to the ethnic group of the Burgenland Croats (percentage of Croats in the total population - 1880: 37%, 1910: 30, 2%, 1934 11%, 1971: 1.7%, 2001: 0.8%).

Economy and infrastructure

Since 2004, the new Stegersbach has opened with health and beauty treatments and a sauna. After an extension of the spa it was acquired in 2008 by Karl J. Reiter and now operates as a rider family Stegersbach.

Many shops in the town center revive the tourism community. In the village there is a commercial academy with additional training golf.

In Steger Bach is a Catholic parish, which belonged to the deanery of the Diocese of Eisenstadt Güssing. The relatively few Lutheran Christians of the village are served by the parish Kukmirn the Evangelical Church A. B. in Burgenland; there is a Protestant church in Steger Bach monthly.
