Tabawan Island

Pulau Tabawan is an island belonging to Malaysia in the open to the Celebes Sea Darvel Bay. The island is located about 60 kilometers east of kunak. Because of their pearl farms it is sometimes called the Pearl Iceland. The name " Tabawan " comes from the Chinese language "大把 湾" and means " so many coves ".

Pulau Tabawan is the largest island of a densely forested group of islands in the southwest of Darvel Bay. Because of its 275 m high summit - the higher of two peaks of volcanic origin - it is easy to recognize. Between two headlands in the south of the island is up to 36 m deep bay.

Use

The island was impossible or very difficult to access because of the pearl farms located here a long time. Since a few years, it's scuba divers are allowed to visit the island.

To protect the island and the tourists - Pulau Tabawan is at risk because of the pearl farms by pirates - is housed on the island of a permanently manned police station and a radar station.
