Talgar

Talghar ( Талғар Kazakh, Russian Талгар / Talgar ) is a city in southern Kazakhstan.

Geographical Location

The city is situated on the banks of the river Talgharka on the slope of Transili Alatau 25 km east of the city of Almaty in Almaty area.

Population

Talghar has 45 579 inhabitants (2009 ).

History

The town was founded in 1858 as a Cossack village Sofijskaja ( станица Софийская ). Its present name since 1919 and got Talghar 1959 granted town rights.
