Tamsui River

The Tamsui ( Danshui also ;淡水河Chinese, Pinyin Dànshuǐ Hé, W.-G. Tan -shui Ho, PEH oē - jī Tam - Sui Ho, freshwater river ' ) is a river in the north of the island of Taiwan, Republic of China. With its main source river Dahan (Chinese大汉 溪, Pinyin Dahan Xī, Strong guy ') it has a length of 158.7 km.

Course

The Dahan rises in the northern part of the central mountain region of Taiwan, on the northern edge of the Xueshan mountain range belonging to 3524 m high Pintian Shan (品 田 山). Its source in the southeast of the district Xinzhu located in National Park Shei - Pa. In its course mainly in the north of the river runs through the eastern part of the counties Xinzhu and Taoyuan, where it is dammed up to a length of 16.5 km to Shimen Reservoir, and then reaches the city of New Taipei City. In Taipei Basin he joins in Banqiao with his coming from the southeast 81 km long right tributary Xindian and bears from then on the name of Tamsui.

The Tamsui forms the western border of the city of Taipei. After he has taken up the 96 km long right tributary of Keelung in the north- west of Taipei, he leaves the Taipei Basin, flows between the Guanyin Shan in the south west and the foothills of the Datun Volcano Group in the northeast through and ends shortly thereafter in the district of Tamsui northwest of Taipei in the Formosastraße.

History

Until the 19th century was at Tamsui an important port, which then, however, lost its importance as a result of siltation. From that time, which was built in 1629 by the Spanish Fort Santo Domingo testifies in Tamsui district. Located on the east bank of the river Wanhua is the historic city center of Taipei.

The modern and currently the expansion located Port of Taipei is located on the territory of the county south of Bali Tamsui estuary directly to the Formosastraße.
