Te Horo

Te Horo and Te Horo Beach are two small towns on the Kapiti Coast in the southwest of the North Island of New Zealand.

Te Horo Beach here is the larger of the two settlements and is located north of Kapiti Iceland on the coast of the Tasman Sea. Demography

At the census, 2001, both settlements and the surrounding countryside 642 inhabitants, an increase of 4.4% (27 people) since the last census in 1996. Most statistical ratios differ little from the average in New Zealand. So 22 % of the population are under 15 years old, 15 % are 65 years and older. However, there is a much higher proportion of inhabitants of European origin ( 93.5 % compared to the national average of 80.1 %) and a greater proportion of couples without children ( 51.7 % compared with 39 % of the national average ).

Economy

To Te Horo there are some farms and in small scale wine production. Many residents commute to work in Wellington and Palmerston North. The coast attracts visitors for swimming and boating.

Transport

Te Horo is located on State Highway 1 and the North Iceland Main Trunk Railway. The railway line was built by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company ( WMR ) as part of their Wellington - Manawatu Line, which was opened on 1 December 1886, had a railway station in Te Horo. The WMR was incorporated on 8 December 1908 in the national route network of the New Zealand Railways Department. The Te Horo station was closed at this time a commuter train, although Capital Connection runs on weekdays once daily in the morning from Palmerston North to Wellington and back in the evening, but passengers must descend from Te Horo, Otaki or Waikanae.
