Geology

The oldest rocks around Tengen belong to the White Jura. These limestones were deposited in front of around 140 million years ago. The White Jura, which is now known primarily as the Upper Jurassic, encountered mainly in canyons and ravines, where he was raised by ablation of the younger molasse and thus can be seen. The main Molasseablagerungen in space Tengen belong to the Upper Marine Molasse (OMM ). The so-called Randengrobkalke or Schalentrümmerkalke, referred to in Tengen and environment incorrectly as Tengener limestone were deposited about 20 million years ago. In its typical configuration of the Randengrobkalk is a coarse sandy Schalentrümmerkalk a pale yellow color. The main ingredients are mostly mussel and snail shells and 20 to 40%, fine to coarse, quartz sand.

Complete fossils are rare. However, shark teeth can be of a size of up to 2 cm found. Such fossils of living in salt water animals also permit the conclusion that there is a deposition of the Upper Marine at Randengrobkalk. The deposits in the area Tengen located near the beach original course. This circumstance is also a reason of different layers. Thus, both continuous and opposing layers at outcrops can be observed. The opposing layers are a near- shore tidal patterns and are referred to as cross - border or stratification. However, such lamination is not the normal case.

The Randengrobkalk was a popular building block in Tengen and environment. The use of the stone as a building material dates back to Roman times. Thus, the former Roman presence was confirmed by a hoard in a quarry near Wiechs am Randen. The Romans continued the Randengrobkalk mainly as a runner for millstones. It was also the Randengrobkalk to store due to its ability to heat, used as a building block for Spas and Hypokaustenheizungen. Also for building houses, the rock was used. Last was the Randengrobkalk, thanks to its nitrate resistance, also known as floor panels in Stallungsbau use.

Quarries, to which the Randengrobkalk was mined, are located in the following locations:

  • Quarry west Tengen City and west of the Hinterburg, Won Flueh, Forest Festival Area
  • Quarry east of Hinterburg in the area of today's construction yard in the direction Büßlingen,
  • Quarries to Uttenhofen,
  • Quarries north of Wiechs am Randen (formerly partially Uttenhofen belonging ),
  • Quarry north of the B314 between Tengen and Blumenfeld,
  • Quarry on the county road 6135 below Talheim (probably a fault in the Jurassic ).
