Thames, New Zealand

Thames is a town on the North Island of New Zealand in the Waikato region. With about 6,800 inhabitants Thames is the administrative seat of the Thames - Coromandel District. The village is located on a fjord of the Hauraki Bay, about 100 km southeast of the city of Auckland.

Thames was the mountain ranges of the Coromandel Peninsula founded in 1867 as a gold mining town between the Firth of Thames ( Thames - promotion ) and the Coromandel Range. Reached in 1868 the population of the town with 18,000 people its peak. At this time, the Thames was more important than the present metropolis of Auckland.

Today about 6,800 people live in the urban area of Thames mainly on tourism, retail and agriculture.
