Background to the album

In September, Miles Davis had - after the departure of George Coleman - formed with the entrance of Wayne Shorter his classic "second Miles Davis Quintet ". After an appearance at the Berlin Jazz Festival 1964 ( held on the album " Miles in Berlin" ) the new band recorded in January 1965 a studio album with original songs, ( "ESP "). In December, followed by a two-week stint at Chicago's Jazz Club " Plugged Nickel".

The Music

"Who knew the new Davis Quintet alone from his studio plate, could hardly get a picture from the concert reality of the group. " The " recorded in an irresistible club atmosphere " recordings from the Plugged Nickel form the culmination of a series of live recordings, that have emerged since 1963 ( such as Miles Davis in Europe or My Funny Valentine ). Richard Cook and Brian Morton called the shooting a monumental document (...), whose five differing dialects often have the most of what is called " post bop " is defined. (...) Pace, and harmonies, melody and dynamics to be radically rethought. The improvisations of the shots would have been unthinkable a few years earlier. Each theme is alluded to only briefly, then " turned into a ballad mood or in a frantic hunt at will, " says the biographer Peter Davis Wießmüller. " Such a sequence is to follow in a further version of So What, the thematic is only indicated as a musical symbol, even faster than in the Berlin Philharmonic, and " All Blues ", in which Shorter's talent at leisure to advantage comes. Soloist Davis admits his located in top form on tenor sax man much space a. During his solos Shorter plays often completely free from any metric structure, but without ever leaving the thread to the overall musical context to lose. "
