The music album The Graduate by Simon & Garfunkel is the soundtrack to the film, which came as The Graduate in the cinemas in Germany. In addition to songs by Simon & Garfunkel, written by Paul Simon, Dave Grusin compositions can be heard. The album was produced by Teo Macero and was released in January 1968. In April, it reached number one on the U.S. album charts.

Formation

Eight of the fourteen tracks on the album come from Simon & Garfunkel, the rest of the film composer Dave Grusin. The contributions of the folk duo are songs that were written by Paul Simon or facilitated in the case of folk melody Scarborough Fair / Canticle. Three of them are variations in each case twice on the album, so that a total of five songs by Simon & Garfunkel material delivered for the album. Of these, four were already published in 1966 on studio albums: The Sound of Silence and April Come She Will on Sounds of Silence, Scarborough Fair / Canticle and The Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine on Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Only Mrs. Robinson was a new Simon & Garfunkel - song.

Originally Paul Simon should write at the request of director Mike Nichols three new songs for the film. Nichols had a soft spot for the music of Simon & Garfunkel and wanted to use it in his film, but saw difficulties, old songs the duo to install. It was similar with the two new songs Punky 's Dilemma and Overs, who introduced Simon Nichols. Ultimately, Simon developed from an unfinished draft that Mrs. Robinson topic. On the soundtrack album two each from about 1:15 minutes long parts are included, the clear in the text, different from the four-minute version, which was released in April 1968 on the album Bookends and as a single.

The album was released on 21 January 1968. On April 6 of this year, it sat at the top of the U.S. album charts Billboard 200 After seven weeks, there was this place from at Bookends, the next studio album by Simon & Garfunkel, the most April 3 was published. After three weeks, The Graduate returned on May 25 back to the top position to be replaced again after two more weeks of Bookends. Simon & Garfunkel were thus a total of 18 weeks in a row at the top of the U.S. album charts. For over two million copies sold album of the Recording Industry Association of America has been awarded double platinum.

The European markets recorded the album differently. In the British charts that was it represented for 71 weeks and reached as best finish third. In the German, Austrian and Swiss charts the album, however, did not show up.
