History

The folk duo Tom and Jerry had already renamed Simon and Garfunkel 1964. Initially it was planned to go for A & R Records into the studio and record an album. When Columbia Records meanwhile worked the producer Tom Wilson and had just the first successes with Bob Dylan. The songs of Paul Simon liked him and so he decided to take the young duo under contract. The album was recorded in March 1964 and contained, in addition to the songs of Paul Simon and songs by other writers. In the center of the album is the first published song Paul Simon's The Sound of Silence, which should be an anthem of the generation of the 1960s and should be the title song of the second, far more successful album by Simon and Garfunkel. The song was responsible for the breakthrough of the folk duo and became a central song of the movie The Graduate from 1967, which also became a cult film as the breakthrough of actor Dustin Hoffman should provide.

Following the initial report of the album in 1964, he was initially a failure. In 1966, Columbia Records decided to release the LP again after the success of the next album by Simon and Garfunkel. This time, the album reached the 30th place on the Billboard charts as the highest placement.
