Style

Katatonias characteristic blend of Gothic Rock and Dark Metal builds on The Great Cold Distance stylistically to at Viva Emptiness. In the often bulky pieces, there are melancholic melodies, heavy riffs and some electronic effects. Once again, hints of progressive rock. The dynamics and the switching between peaceful and aggressive passages are re- marked, in the partially structured pieces rather straightforward but predictable than on the previous album.

Reception

Also this album was well received by the press. Praises Sebastian Hauck of the Baby Blue Pages The Great Cold Distance with restrictions: "This album is one of the better of the band. It is incredibly powerful, the mixture of hardness and melody quite well, and the plate is very homogeneous. Nevertheless, you have to cut back. In particular, the low variability in the singing and the predictability of structures contribute to the fact that the album is not as good as it could have been. " Tobias Blum of Rock Hard but expresses appreciation that it was" marked by the unique, laconic melancholy voice of Jonas Renske, virtuoso instrumental design and a highly complex songwriting ". Also for Kilian Fried powermetal.de of the album offers " a varied mix of powerful, eruptive and quiet, atmospheric Parts".
