Style

The album builds on Katatonias characteristic blend of Progressive Rock, Gothic Rock and Dark Metal of Night Is the New Day and refined it further. The pieces are mostly melancholic and overall a little quieter, they attack still there and back on the typical heavy riffs and guitar walls. Also soundscapes and electronic effects find use.

Reception

The album was recorded mostly positive from the press. Sebastian Hauck of the Baby Blue Pages criticized, however, " that the whole thing somehow already know, [ ... ] structures, harmonies, riffs, and even whole passages seem familiar, almost as if the band copy itself ". Oliver is also the amble of powermetal.de, " more variety, especially in comparison to their own discography, would it then but may be. " Anton Kostudis of metal.de but praised the " rousing atmosphere and emotionality " of the album. Raziq Rauf of BBC Music called Dead End Kings as " another excellent album" full of " moments of impressive, majestic beauty." In the German Metal Hammer, it was album of the month September 2012.
