Style

Compared to Last Fair Deal Gone Down Katatonias characteristic mixture of gothic rock and dark metal on Viva Emptiness is less catchy. It can still be found melancholic melodies, heavy riffs and some electronic effects, the album is, however, a total of harder and bulkier, also show the pieces partially reminiscent of the progressive rock of bands like Porcupine Tree or Tool. The dynamics and the switching between peaceful and aggressive passages are again pronounced in the complex structured pieces but less predictable than on the previous album.

Reception

Also this album was extremely well received by the press. Thom Yorke of Allmusic called Viva Emptiness as " intellectually challenging, yet musically accessible ". Kristian Selm of the Baby Blue Pages verdict: "The tension between hardness, sophisticated rhythm with some oblique melodies and carrier, lyrical serenity, coupled with a harmonious wonderful vocal lines makes for lasting enjoyment. " Wolf - Rüdiger vom Rock Hard praises: " is the band playful and has designed their songs diverse and colorful. Great melodies were provided with large compositional accessories, each piece offers surprising twists, fascinating riffs, clever electronic finesse and a huge singing integrated range. "
