The Hollies

The Hollies are a British pop band, founded in the early 1960s in Manchester, northern England.

History

The school friends Allan Clarke ( born April 5, 1942 as Harold Allan in Salford, Lancashire ) and Graham Nash appeared first as Two teen. As Jeremy Levine (rhythm guitar), Eric Haydock ( born February 3, 1942 in Burnley, Lancashire ) were added and the drummer Don Rathbone, they first called themselves the Four Tones, then the deltas and finally The Hollies. Although all members were fans of Buddy Holly, the band name is not a reference to it. The name was (English: holly ) through the branches of a holly inspired, which they saw for Christmas 1962. Levine was dismissed from the band in 1963, after he had come into conflict with the law. He was replaced by Tony Hicks, who dominated beside the guitar and the banjo and keyboard. In addition, his voice was much more marked than those of Levine. After a few weeks in the year 1963, also the drummer Don Rathbone by Bobby Elliott was replaced, who had played with Hicks in the band, The Dolphins.

In 1963 the band signed a record deal with Parlophone, where The Beatles were under contract. They brought their first album in 1964, both in Europe and in America out. Their first hit was the cover version of Stay, with which she made it into the Top 10 in England. In 1964 to 1970, she had 20 hits in the English Top 40 charts. The group recorded mainly on self-composed songs by Clarke, Hicks and Nash, who were partly listed under the pseudonym " L. Ransford ". In addition, the group also took up various cover versions and also grabbed back on material that was offered to them by professional songwriters. In 1966, bassist Eric Haydock was replaced by Bernie Calvert, who had also played with Elliott and Hicks at the Dolphins. The Hollies Producer Ron Richards was not very happy with this change and criticized the bass playing of Calvert in the booklet of the CD 20 Song Anthology.

In 1968, Graham Nash, the band went to the USA and became part of Crosby, Stills and Nash. He was replaced by Terry Sylvester ( born January 8, 1945 in Liverpool), who was previously inter alia at The Swinging Blue Jeans. This new lineup finally came in 1969 with Sorry Suzanne, a third place in the UK charts. In the same year also appeared the LP " Hollies sing Dylan ", which came in at number 3 of the album charts in England. A preliminary extraction of Blowin 'in the wind as a single (presumably only in Continental Europe ) reached in the Netherlands in 1968, the # 8 on the charts and is - at least in Germany - from time to time to hear on the radio or on a best- finding of sampler. 1970 the Group received by readers' choice and a Bronze Bravo Otto in the youth magazine BRAVO.

In late 1971 Allan Clarke was briefly replaced by the Swede Mikael Rickfors. During this time, however, neither the still Hollies Clarke, who released two solo albums, successful, and in July 1973 Clarke returned to the band. With another cover version, The Air That I Breathe, they made it in 1974 once again at # 2 in the UK charts and in the top 10 in the U.S.. The original of this song was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and originally recorded by Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers.

Until the mid- late 1970s brought a series of top hits the Hollies high drive sales and international success with the public. In the following decade, it was silent to the group whose members changed from here on more often. Graham Nash gave a brief comeback in the Hollies, and took with them the Supremes hits Stop in the Name of Love on. Mid-1988 the Hollies came with the re-release of He Is not Heavy, He's My Brother, that was used by a brewery for a television commercial, back in the UK charts and reached # 1 member of the group was now Ray Stiles, previously bassist with Mud. In 1999, Allan Clarke withdrew from the music world and left the band. He was replaced by Carl Wayne, who died in 2004. Since then takes over new entry Peter Howarth the lead vocals.

Unlike the Beatles, at their melodic style, the Hollies songs often reminded, the group remained rather reticent about stylistic experiments. She sat instead on most lightweight pop- rock sound and influenced by the Everly Brothers three -part harmony singing, which became the trademark of the band.

Among her best-known hits include Bus Stop, Carrie Anne, He Is not Heavy, He's My Brother, Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress and her last international charts success The Air That I Breathe (1974).

On 15 March 2010, the Hollies have been included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At the presentation Nash, Sylvester and Clarke were present and with some guest musicians on the stage, while the current band ( with Hicks and Elliott ) was indispensable for a tour.
