The Mambo Kings

The Mambo Kings ( The Mambo Kings ) is an American musical film directed by Arne Glimcher from the year 1992. Cynthia Cidre wrote the screenplay from a novel by Oscar Hijuelos.

Action

The Cuban brothers César (played by Armand Assante ) and Nestor (Antonio Banderas ) Castillo advised in the 1950s in Havana in conflict with those involved in organized crime club owners. They flee to the United States, where they hope to pursue a career as a musician. In New York she initially working as a butcher.

The brothers appear on the side of Tito Puente. But César proves again and again as little willing to compromise, which prevents the brothers from reaching their goal. Nestor married Delores Fuentes ( Maruschka Detmers ).

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun - Times, 13 March 1992, the story being told was old. However, the film as so much " energy ", " passion " and " vitality " in that he acts like new. The audience knows from the beginning that he would not be surprised, but also that he would "probably" not bored. The screenplay obvious narrative weaknesses.

Awards

The song Beautiful Maria of My Soul was nominated in 1993 as Best Song for an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award. The song was also nominated alongside composition Mambo Caliente in the same year at the Grammys. Antonio Banderas was nominated in 1993 for the Fotogramas de Plata for the Spanish Edición Premios Unión de Actores.
