Band History

According to band legend, the group was founded on June 8, 1986, the day on which the son Sindri of singer Bjork and guitarist Þór Eldon Jónsson was born. Already the first single from the Sugarcubes, " Ammæli " ( " Birthday" ), was not least by supporting John Peel in England equal to a great success, and the group quickly gained in the USA and England cult status. Soon after followed the calls of the record companies. The group wrote on the independent label One Little Indian Records in England and Elektra Records (which belonged to Warner Music Group ) in the United States and in 1988 their first album, Life's too good to. The album brought the Sugarcubes within a short time international fame. This was followed in the following years, two more studio albums that cemented the reputation of the band as an independent, creative act. Thus, the Sugarcubes were the first Icelandic band that was popular worldwide and won influence with its own style. During this time, Björk worked over and over again on different projects in different musical fields, and at the beginning of the nineties, her growing interest in electronic music has become increasingly clear. As more and more built up tensions in this context between Björk and Einar Örn 1992 and the other band members, it was decided not to put the friendship in jeopardy, musical to go separate ways and disband the Sugarcubes. Björk then launched her highly successful solo career.

In November 2006, the band in Reykjavík their first single Ammæli occurred on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the publication again on together. The proceeds of the planned from the beginning as a one-off concert gigs benefited young Icelandic bands.

Style

The sound of the Sugarcubes is determined by idiosyncratic, often escapist texts, one for that time withdrawn, but clear indie instrumentation, as well as and especially the characteristic voice of the singer Björk, who is as well in their later solo projects are absolutely the focus here already. Your vocal exchange between gentle vocals, screaming and crying crashes interludes gives the music its very own emotional depth, but also different even then fans of haters.
