Thorbjørn Jagland

Thorbjørn Jagland ( born November 5, 1950 in Drammen ) is a Norwegian social democratic politician and since 2009 Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

Life

He was from 1996 to 1997 Prime Minister of Norway, 2000-2001 Foreign Minister Jens Stoltenberg's Cabinet from 1992 to 2002 Chairman of the Social Democratic Party ( Arbeiderpartiet ). He was replaced as chairman by Jens Stoltenberg.

He was President of the Norwegian Parliament ( Storting ) from October 2005 to 2009. In 2009, he was succeeded by Dag Terje Andersen. Since 2009 he is also director of the Committee for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize and officiated in this position is expected by the end of 2015. September 29, 2009, he was elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council to the Secretary-General. He sat down with 165 to 80 votes, with 12 invalid votes against his competitors, former Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz through.

October 9, 2009 Jagland announced as chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award the incumbent U.S. President Barack Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize. The decision came on a divided world and muffled echo. Through an indiscretion was known that succeeded Jagland and his party colleague Sissel Rønbeck only after a long discussion to convince the three other judges of their proposal.

On 25 January 2010, he presented his policy reform plan for the Euro Europe and declared on this occasion, the Euro Europe could be " a beacon for Europe, careful monitoring of developments, seeking new social and political crises foresee ".
