Tibouren

Tibouren is a red wine grape that is grown almost exclusively in the Var department in the Provence region of France. It is usually ( partly unmixed) expanded to rosé, which give off a slight fragrance of herbs and should be drunk young. However, it is also used as a table grape. Tibouren is part of the Appellation d' Origine ( short AOC ) wines Côtes de Provence, Coteaux Varois en Provence and range.

After the French ampelographers Pierre Galet Tibouren comes possibly from the Middle East and has been introduced in ancient times by the Greeks. The local stories after she was taken by a Navy Captain Antiboul name towards the end of the 17th century in the area around Saint- Tropez. Therefore, the species also carry the name of anti Boleyn. However Antiboul is also the name of the medieval town of Antibes. A relationship with the variety Rossese is not excluded.

In Armenia, there is also a variety called graubeerige Tibouren Gris and a variety with white berries called Tibouren Blanc. A relationship could not be demonstrated.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is strong whitish hairs with slightly reddish approach. The yellowish, slightly bronzed ( anthocyanin ) young leaves are hairy slightly woolly.
  • The large leaves ( see also the article sheet form) and are heavily indented five lobes ( even seven to neunlappig sometimes). The petiole lyres -shaped closed. The leaf margin is finely serrated. The teeth are small in comparison with the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is vesicular coarse.
  • The cylindrical to conical bunch is medium to large in size and shouldered. The slightly oval berries are medium in size, ranging from red to blue-black color.

The vine cast out relatively early, making them sensitive to late spring frosts. Tibouren is susceptible to downy mildew, anthracnose the. It also tends to coulure.

Tibouren matures about 12-15 days after Chasselas making it one of the early ripening red grape varieties.

Tibouren is also known under the synonyms of anti- Bois, anti Boleyn, Antiboulène, Antibouren, Antibourin, Gaysserin, Geysserin, Gueipperim noir, Guesserin, Sarreiron (especially in the area around the church Cuers ) Tiboulen, Tiboulin, Tibouren noir, Tibourin and Tibourin noir.
