Coteaux Varois AOC

The vineyards of the Coteaux Varois en Provence is centrally located in the French wine-growing region of Provence. It is embedded in the Côtes de Provence. The vineyards, which have since 26 March 1993 on the status of an Appellation d' Origine ( AOC short ) include 1,750 hectares in 28 municipalities of the department of Var. The wines, which are divided to 60% on rosé, 35 % red and 5% white wine will be expanded from 15 wine cooperatives as well as 62 self-marketing wineries. The areas are located in the immediate vicinity of the city of Brignoles, a former seat of the Counts of Provence, and are located at an altitude of 200 to 500 m, where the average is 350 m. In 2005 the name Coteaux varois was extended by the addition of en Provence. This should enable better identification with the region Provence and the wine can offer more marketing opportunities.

Generally, a harvest restriction applies to max. 55 hectoliters / hectare. The minimum alcohol content of wine is 11 % by volume.

  • Red wine and rosé wine is made from at least two of the main Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache. The combined share of these varieties is at least 80 %. Furthermore, the varieties Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tibouren are allowed. In the rosé further max allowed. 10 % white grape varieties to be included. Varietal wines are not allowed in this appellation. A minimum of 20% of the rosé must be won with the Saignée process.
