Forcalqueiret

Forcalqueiret is a commune with 2547 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Forcalqueiret located in surrounded by forest hills Issole Valley. Brignoles is about 10 kilometers by road north behind the hills of Les Brasques. Until the department prefecture of Toulon and the Mediterranean coast is about 40 km to the south. If you follow the Issole over their mouth in the Caramy and the Argens further to its mouth into the sea, lies about 75 km Frejus.

History

In 1030 the place as Furnum Calcarium or Calcherium was first mentioned in traditional sources. The name refers to the lime kilns that were operated in the High Middle Ages.

The town was under the rule of the Counts of Marseille, later those of Agoult, Vins, Forbin and Villeneuve. 1744 a Marquisat was built.

The castle belonged to the Lord of Vins, Hubert de Garde, of La Rochelle saved the life of the Prince of Anjou, the future Henri III. The fort withstood the siege of Charles V and Lesdiguières.

Culture and sights

  • The ruined castle of castellas, the former village of Forcalqueiret from the 12th to the 14th century is classified as a Monument Historique Inscrit and is considered one of the most remarkable monuments of Provence verte.
