Besse-sur-Issole

Besse -sur -Issole is a commune with 2980 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Personalities

  • Gaspard Bouis (1757 -1781), called Gaspard de Besse, was a highwayman who lived in the 18th century. According to legend, he plundered royal treasury officials and nobles in the Massif des Maures and distributed the booty among the poor. Bouis Gaspard was born in Besse -sur -Issole. Jean Aicard praised him as a literary bandits with the heart of a nobleman.
