Vinon-sur-Verdon

Viñón -sur -Verdon ( Provence Viñón - sus -Verdon or Vinoun - sus - Verdoun ) is a commune with 4200 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

The municipality is located in the Regional Natural Park Verdon, barely seven kilometers from the nuclear research center Cadarache.

History

Traces of an early settlement of the area lead to the Gallo- Roman era. On the right bank of the Verdon are the remains of a Roman villa with mosaic decoration and inscriptions.

The place was first mentioned in the year 1074 the Vino or Vinonum. Bérenger, Count of Provence was the place in 1238 to the Knights Templar as a fief, who kept the rule until the French Revolution. In 1591, the Château Viñón resisted the troops Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy.

Population

In comparison, the total French population increased in Viñón -sur -Verdon to above average. The reason for this is in addition to the very positive birth rate, a strong inflow into the community in the 1960s and 1980s. The total population of the municipality was considerably more than doubled during the survey period.

Culture and sights

  • The airfield of Viñón -sur -Verdon houses the Association Aéronautique Verdon Alpilles, the oldest gliding center of France
  • At the Moulin de Saint André, a renovated old mill on the banks of the Verdon, you will find the tourist office, a theater stage, a cinema and a concert hall.
