Tavernes
Tavernes ( Provence tavernas or Taverno ) is a commune with 1268 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.
Geography
Tavernes is in the northwest of the Var, 30 km north of Brignoles in a fertile, tree- level hills, cultivated in the vineyards and olive groves. In the north of the municipality is the Forêt du Gros Bois, flows through the plane of the Ruisseau des Ecrevisses ( Krebsbach ) and some watercourses that do not result in water all year due to the sometimes very dry climate.
History
Tavernes appears in the year 979 the first time as Villa Tavern in the sources. In the 11th century speak of the village tavernas. Tavernes was a fief of Pontevès, later of Cadarache, which passed to the Counts of Provence, the families of Simiane and Condé- Soubise.
Attractions
The pilgrimage chapel Chapelle Notre -Dame-de -Bellevue, which since the 19th century leads a Via Crucis, is 637 meters above sea level on one of the highest points in the community. From there, you have a wide view over the landscape in the plane.
