Les Salles-sur-Verdon

Les Salles- sur -Verdon ( Provençal Lei Salas de Verdon or Lei Salo - sus - Verdoun ) is a commune with 237 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in Provence in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes -Cote d ' Azur.

The village was formerly on the river Verdon, whose regular flooding fertile farmland could arise. It has grown wheat, almonds, lavender and fruit especially truffle oaks. In 1971 the town was further rebuilt 400 m higher up due to the construction of the Sainte- Croix dam. The old village was eventually blown up in 1974 and then flooded with the damming of the Lac de Sainte- Croix. Only the church tower, the village bell and the old village wells were dismantled and rebuilt in the new town from the old village. The church was blown up along with almost all the buildings of the town before the flooding. Some of the residents contributed to the last resistor and remained in their homes, though the water was already penetrated into the houses. After the last harvest before the village was destroyed, the farmers had again brought 4 tons of truffles on the market of Riez.

Today, Les Salles is the youngest town in France and thrives on tourism and is equipped with a hotel, shops and some campgrounds an important tourist resort in the region. The damming of the Verdon attracts many tourists, especially from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Italy. The municipality is located in the Regional Natural Park Verdon.
