Rocbaron

Rocbaron is a commune with 3735 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Rocbaron lies in an era marked by low, wooded with pine and chestnut trees, hills landscape. From the 200 m deeper in the section neighboring village of Puget -Ville you can reach Rocbaron via a steep, winding road through the Bois d' Astros.

The French long-distance trail GR9 from Saint -Amour on Léoncel to Saint -Tropez crosses the area.

History

Already in prehistoric and Roman times the area of ​​the village was settled. A settlement of today's name is first documented as De Rocabarone in 1019 and may indicate a man named Rocca de Baron. Later, the place was one of the counties Marseille, Agoult, Vins, Forbin and Villeneuve.

Demographics

The population development of the community in the last 40 years of the 20th century is remarkable. At the beginning of the 1960s, lived less than 100 people in the town, whose population is more than verdreißigfachte since the 1980s as a result of amplified again observed influx to the turn of the millennium.

Buildings and monuments

The old center of the village is well preserved. Its hillside location with old houses typical for the region in construction. The bell tower with a small Campanile dates from the year 1887. An old gate in the Rue des Fayssonnes dates from the 16th century.

In the immediate vicinity of the village stand on a rocky outcrop, the ruins of the Château de Saint- Sauveur, its polygonal donjon with the notches for the archers, the lined-up living rooms and the chapel from the 13th century.

The parish church of Saint- Sauveur dates from the 18th century and was renovated in the 19th century.

Located near the Gemeindegut La Verrerie. There remains of a lime kiln, charcoal burners huts, the former sheep barn and a stone bridge can be seen.
