Entrecasteaux

Entrecasteaux ( Occitan: Entrecasteus, Provençal Entrecastèu ) is a facility located in the north of the Var region of Provence -Alpes- Côte d' Azur region commune with 1089 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ), which the municipal bond ( Communauté de communes ) Comté de Provence counts. The village of the same name, which forms the center of the municipality is known for its castle and its designed by André Le Nôtre gardens.

Geography

Entrecasteaux is located in a region called Provence in the Valley of Bresque, a tributary of the Argens. Carcès, Cotignac, Lorgues and Salernes are as immediate neighboring towns of 5-10 km, the regional center of Draguignan is located about 20 km to the east.

History

The name of the local Entrecasteaux, the mutatis mutandis means " between castles ", goes back to its location between the medieval fortifications Pardigon, Riforan and Salgues. Also Entrecasteaux itself was originally surrounded by stone walls, developed a village in its protection from the 10th century. The first known written record was made in 1012 as Intercastra in the Cartulaire of the monastery of Saint -Victor in Marseille.

In the 11th century Entrecasteaux became a county of the Castellane family, which in the 14th century was followed by the Count of Grignan. These were built in 1670 on the basis of an existing castle Entrecasteaux the castle, whose grounds were designed by André Le Nôtre. Among the inhabitants of the castle was one of the 18th century and the navigator and explorer Joseph Bruny d' Entrecasteaux, whose family had acquired the fief Entrecasteaux 1713. After the abandonment of the feudal castle changed hands several times the owner and is now privately owned, tourists but accessible.
