Tillia

Region

Tillia is a rural municipality and the capital of the eponymous department Tillia in Niger.

Geography

Tillia is located mainly in the northern Sahel, and goes to the north into the Sahara desert. The municipality is bordered to the west by the neighboring country of Mali. The neighboring communities in Niger are Ingall in the north, and Tassara Tchintabaraden in the east, in the southeast Kao, Affala, Takanamat and Tébaram in the south and Abala in the southwest. The municipality is divided into twelve administrative villages, two traditional villages, seven hamlets, 22 warehouses and 17 water points. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Tillia.

History

Tillia 1964 received the status of an administrative post ( poste administratif ) within the territory of the arrondissements Tchintabaraden, later Department Tchintabaraden. The rural community of Tillia was established as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform in a previously unincorporated area. The administrative posts of Tillia was removed in 2011 from the Department Tchintabaraden and collected at the Department Tillia.

Population

At the 2001 census Tillia had 17,210 inhabitants. For the year 2010 23.187 inhabitants were calculated.

Culture and sights

Every two years, in October there will be a festival of Arab ranchers in Tillia and in the neighboring municipality Tassara.

Economy and infrastructure

South of the desert area grazing is operated. In the extreme south of the municipality of the zone of Agropastoralismus begins.
