Tommy Loughran

Tommy Loughran ( born November 29, 1902 in Philadelphia, † July 7, 1982 in Altoona, Pennsylvania ) was an American boxer.

Career

In 1919, the counter- boxer his career. He was very skilled in defensive boxing, but had little clout. He lost an early fight with a broken rib, but lost otherwise below the heavyweight class never prematurely.

He lost three of five fights against Harry Greb with a win and a draw, he also defeated Gene Tunney and 1924 and 1925 Young Stribling.

1927, after the end of "No Decision era," he could be light heavyweight world champion after a points victory over Mike McTigue. He then defended the title until 1929 and defeated Among other things, Mickey Walker, James Braddock, Jimmy Slattery, Leo Lomsky and Pete Latzo. He then resigned the title to continue boxing in the heavyweight division.

However, early in his first fight in this weight class he went against Jack Sharkey KO, but could 1931 Max Baer and Paolino Uzcudun defeat. In 1933 he won the rematch against Sharkey.

On 1 March 1934 he was given the chance to the world title in the heavyweight division to fight and succumbed to almost 40 kg heavier defending champion Primo Carnera on points.

In the next fight, he also lost on points against Walter Neusel. He boxed without much success even further to 1937 and then finished his career.

1991 found Loughran induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
