Tony Greig

William Anthony "Tony" Greig (* October 6, 1946; † 29 December 2012) was a South African -born English cricketer and commentator. He was a so-called batting all-rounder, who dominated both medium pace and off spin bowling. He was captain of Sussex and 1975-1977 also captain of the England national team. The eligibility to play for England, he became, ironically, by his Scottish father.

His younger brother Ian Greig has also played Test cricket, several other members of his family circle first-class cricket.

He was one of the leading players in the English County Championship and was considered one of the best English -rounder. However, he was also involved in many controversies. So he helped Kerry Packer 's World Series Cricket in building by bringing many of his English, but also West Indian and Pakistani players colleagues on board, which cost him the England captain dignity. His controversial Run out against Alvin Kallicharran during a test match against the West Indies in 1974 led to riots in the stadium and he had frequent clashes with the Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee on the 1974-75 Ashes tour in Australia. His infamous " I intend to make them grovel " remark to the team in the West Indies in the run-up to the 1976 tour to England was very severely criticized, especially because of his South African background.

After his active career he became cricket commentary and later emigrated to Australia. He suffered a long time from epilepsy and was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2012. Greig died on December 29, 2012 in Sydney, New South Wales, probably due to a heart attack.
