Tornaľa ( 1948-1990 Slovak " Šafárikovo "; Hungarian Tornalja - older even Tornallya ) is a city in Okres Revúca ( Banskobystrický kraj ) in the southern central Slovakia with 7474 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011)

Geography

The city is located in the eastern part of the boiler Rimavská kotlina (part of the southern Slovakian boiler ) on the river Slaná south of Revúca near the Hungarian border. The center is located at an altitude of 181 m nm and is 27 kilometers from Rimavská Sobota, 34 kilometers from Rožňava and 126 km from Banská Bystrica located ( road distance ).

  • Králik (1963 amalgamated, Hungarian Sajókirályi )
  • Starna (1971 amalgamated, Hungarian Sajószárnya )
  • Tornaľa

History

The city was founded in 1245 first mentioned in writing as Köwy, was until 1918 the county Gemer and small Hont as the seat of a chair district of the Kingdom of Hungary, then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. By the First Vienna Award they came from 1938 to 1945 for a short time again to Hungary.

She was called from 1948 to 1990 in honor of the Slovak Pavol Jozef Šafárik linguist Šafárikovo
