Tower Gateway DLR station

Tower Gateway is a station on the Docklands Light Railway ( DLR) in the City of London. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 1 on the street called Minories, near the Tower of London. Tower Gateway is one of two western termini of the DLR.

The station corresponds to the original philosophy of DLR: Uncomplicated design and minimal features. It is a twin-track railway terminus in high position with a narrow island platform and is located directly next to the railway tracks of the station Fenchurch Street, the head end but is on the other side of the street. The access is guaranteed at the western end by means of escalators, an elevator and stairs. At the eastern end there is another stair access. The subway station Tower Hill performs a pedestrian underpass.

History

Already at the opening of the DLR network base on 31 August 1987 it was foreseeable that the limited capacity of the Station Tower Gateway never with the rapid development of the financial district in the Docklands (and especially Canary Wharf ) would be able to keep up. Also, the walk proved necessary to the subway station Tower Hill as unattractive. For these reasons, a tunnel Bank Tube station was built, which was opened on 29 July 1991. This branch line touches Tower Gateway directly; the branch, however, lies just a little further east and can be seen from the path rising from.

Despite the opening of the line in the direction of Bank Tower Gateway remained preserved and now serves as the terminus of the less high-demand trains to Beckton. All other goals can only be reached only with change. This meant that the station has at least lost much of its importance in the rush hour. From June 30, 2008 until March 2, 2009, the station was closed in order to develop for the operation of trains with three cars.

At the site of the present Tower Gateway station was once the Minories station. These were the temporary terminus of the London opened on July 6, 1840 and Blackwall Railway (then as Commercial Railway called ). After the opening of something further west Fenchurch Street railway station in 1841 the Minories station was closed. He remained until 24 October 1853 as the alternate terminal in operation. Until the construction of the DLR station in 1986 were at this point sidings for freight trains.
