Tōyako, Hokkaido

Tōyako (Japanese洞 爷 湖 町, -chō ) is a Japanese city on Lake Toya ( Toya -ko ) on Hokkaido, whose name it bears. It is located in the southern, the sub-prefecture Iburi that part of Abuta -gun southwest of the island.

Geography

The area Tōyakos extends on the western shore of the lake to the sea coast to the southwest. To the north and west lies Rusutsu Toyoura.

As the island of Hokkaido is also generally characterized Tōyako rural and sparsely populated even by Japanese standards with 61.6 inhabitants / km ². While the landscape of the southern part in Abuta is strongly determined by the mountains that separate the lake from the sea, the north of the area is flat and allows agriculture.

History

Tōyako was created on 27 March 2006 by combining the Chō Abuta (虻 田 町, Abuta- chō, 2004: 7.811 inhabitants) and the Mura Toya (洞 爷 村, Toya -mura, 2004: 2,221 inhabitants). This happened after a referendum in both communities in February 2005. This is due to the reunification of the state from 1920 restored as Abuta and Toya had been separated.

On 23 April 2007 it was announced that Prime Minister Abe Shinzō Tōyako has selected as the venue for the 34th G8 Summit from 7 to 9 July 2008.

Traffic

The two stops Toya and Signal Factory Kita- irie lie on the JR Muroran Main Line connects the Oshamanbe and Iwamizawa over the coastal route. The national highways 37 and 230, and the doo - highway crossing Tōyako.

Economy

According to the census of 2000 at 68.8 % total share of the economy, the third sector in the form of tourism -related service providers in the most important branch of revenue. The manufacturing sector has 23% share of little importance; to call is food production. The resident since the Meiji period Iodgewinnung ( from Tang ) and flax processing has disappeared since the 1960s. From 1905 to 1971, there was an iron ore mine. Heavy industry or chemical industry is not to be found. With 8.1 % agriculture ( animal husbandry, cultivation of grain, potatoes, vegetables, etc.) and fishing (salmon, cod ) are present but play no significant role.

Attractions

Apart from the natural beauty of the lake and the Shikotsu- Toya National Park, the place also has volcanic springs (onsen ). The region attracts both summer tourists and winter sports enthusiasts.

The International Sculpture Biennale Tōyamura since 1993 takes place a biennial art exhibition for small sculptures and sculptures.
