Geography

Over the Traun

The Traun arises in Styria in the Dead Mountains as Grundlseer Traun in a source, the origin behind the Traun Kammersee, flows through the Toplitzsee and then the Grundlsee. Between Toplitzsee and Grundlsee means of course Toplitz or Toplitzbach.

In Bad Aussee, the Grundlseer Traun combined with the Altausseer Traun ( from Altausseersee ), and is also called Badausseer Traun, officially United Traun. Shortly thereafter, at Unterkainisch that Kainischtraun flows to (as Ödensee Traun from Ödensee and Riedlbach - Traun from Hochmühleck ), from here it's called Koppentraun. This upper catchment area (without Ödensee ) is the Ausseerland as the northern part of the Styrian Salzkammergut. The Koppentraun flows westward through a gorge with the Koppenpass and a web connection until she turns on the Dachstein massif to the north and Lake Hallstatt feeds.

Only from the lake outlet it is called final Traun. It crosses in the middle reaches, initially called Goisern Traun, the inner Salzkammergut Bad Ischl, where it picks up the Ischl from Lake Wolfgang, Bad Ischl and the Traun then Ebenseer Traun is called, and maintains the north-east direction. It flows on Höllengebirge along and at Ebensee in the Traunsee. After emerging from the lake located at Traunstein in Gmunden Gmunden Traun it is also called, is leaving the Salzkammergut mountains and enters the Alpine foothills.

In barn -Paura she takes the Ager from Attersee forth on their largest side of the river, and flows at Wels past through the flat Welser Heide and tangent to the town of Traun. At the boundary between Ansfelden Linz and much of the water is diverted to the upstream channel on the Traun River weir which feeds the power station Linz -Klein Munich.

The Traun opens in the city of Linz, south of the plant site of voestalpine, in Ebelsberg into the Danube.

Sections of the Trauntals

The valley of the Traun is clearly structured, and upstream includes the following regions:

  • Lower Trauntal of the Danube near Linz to barn -Paura, junctions of Alm and Ager, flat and hilly land of Welser plate
  • Traun Gorge to Traunfall, a cavity portion in the Ager - Traun - terraces of the Alpine Foothills
  • Middle Trauntal between Traunsee and Lake Hallstatt, between Höllengebirge / Zimnitz and Traunstein group to Bad Ischl, and Osterhorngruppe and Totes Gebirge upstream, includes with Traunsee and Ischler pool ( Ischler country) two basin (room unit Salzkammergut Talungen - which also includes the side valleys of the Ischl and Gosau creek include )
  • Narrow valley of Koppentraun, between the Dachstein Massif and Sarstein
  • Ausseerland with the source rivers and lakes, basin between Dachsteinmasiv and Totem Mountain

No more Trauntal in the true sense is the northern part of the valley Hinterberger (upper Kainischtraun ), which is rather attributed as Talpass landscape of inner-alpine Enns Valley region.

History

The Traun was ridden in the Roman period from Traunfall to the mouth of the river Danube with a flat barges. Furthermore, the Traun was very important for the salt and timber transport. The boat trip on the River Traun is shown in Schiffleutmuseum in barn -Paura.

In the army of the First Republic Alfred Jansa plans for defense against a German attack on the level of the Traun line were developed under the leadership of Chief of General Staff Lieutenant Field Marshal.

Environment

Water quality

The Traun was earlier in their lower reaches by industry (eg, paper mills in Laakrichen ) and the inflow of highly exposed Ager ( pulp mill chemical fiber Lenzung ) very contaminated and pointed in parts only grade IV. Today she has throughout the course grade I or II, so you have in catfish a few meters visibility.

The upper reaches of the Koppentraun is a famous fishing waters, which provides a natural river bed over several kilometers. The breakthrough of Koppentraun is feared dangerous than canoeing waters. The Traunfall at Steyrermühl is one of the few river dive sites for divers and snorkelers in Austria.

Economy

Nowadays it is mainly the power plants on the river Traun are significant.
