Geography

Geographical location

The community is located at the junction of Gegendtals to Villach pool with shares on the western shore of Lake Ossiach, about 8 km north of Villach. In the northeast, the municipality extends to the Gerlitze, in the southwest to the Krastal, for Hochpirkach and Oswaldiberg.

Community structure

The municipality is divided into seven local villages. These are: Buchholz, Ossiachberg, Sattendorf, Töbring, meetings, Verditz and Winklern.

Neighboring communities

History

Finds dating back to 500 BC indicate early settlements in Görtschach and Krastal. N To 45 AD and after today municipality of meeting was colonized by the Romans. Even then Krastal marble was won in Krastal as Roman stones of marble, which are built into the parish church prove. Furthermore, it can be assumed that in the region of St. Ruprecht am Moos was the road station Santicum. The over the Plöckenpass and by the Drau valley running loud Antonine Itinerary of Aquileia Roman military road Via Julia Augusta led Santicum on and on about Feldkirchen, St. Peter am Bichl ( milestone ) and Karnburg after Virunum. The later addition of the trade route through the Canal Valley ( in the Tabula Peutingeriana detected ) will have been connected here with a Drauübergang. It was a strategically important road junction. After the Romans, Slavs settled here, from this period are the Slavic name " Trebina " for meetings and " Conpolje " ( = field) for Pölling.

860 meeting was first mentioned in a document by which the Frankish king Louis the German to the royal court meetings (" curtis ad Trebinam ") and 70 Huben gave the Bishop of Salzburg Adalwin. Today it is assumed that they are possessions, the close of meetings today, but at the municipality of Villach ( near the town of St. Ruprecht am Moos ). In the year 876 a deed of King Carloman mentioned the name of meeting one more time when he wore royal own property in the Bavarian monastery Ötting ( in the same document, which is the oldest original document Carinthia, even today Villach is first mentioned as pons Uillah ). The monastery built in 890 meetings in the parish church of St. Maximilian. About the diocese of Passau and the gender of the Eppensteiner meeting came in 1163 in the possession of the Patriarchate of Aquileia.

The Castle meeting on foothills of Oswaldibergs was built in the 16th century by the noble family of Liechtenstein. After the destruction by an earthquake in 1690 it was rebuilt a year later.

The community meeting was formed in 1850, in 1984 it was raised to the market town.

Today is a popular meeting place especially for summer tourism and recorded 450,000 overnight stays per year. The in 1925 built and opened in 1928 pulpit rail is still a tourist attraction of the town.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the municipality has 4,279 inhabitants meeting, of which 95.3 % 1.8% Austrian and German citizens.

For the Roman Catholic Church to 51.9 % of the community population profess the Protestant Church 37.6 % and Islam 0.8%. Without religious beliefs are 6.8%. The community is thus one of those municipalities in Carinthia, where the Protestant share is highest.

Parish council

The council has 23 members and is composed as follows since the municipal elections in 2009 together:

  • SPÖ: 10 seats
  • FPK: 8 seats
  • ÖVP: 4 seats
  • Freedom Party: 1 seat

Directly elected mayor since January 7, 2013 Klaus Glanznig ( SPÖ).

Coat of arms

From the first Earl of meetings, which are detectable since 1125, there is no crest is handed down, so they resorted to the award of a coat of arms for the municipality, which was formally on 22 August 1960 on the Seal of the followers of the castle district meetings back, the an obliquely placed right wall anchors with scalloped ends shows, and is available at a deed of Ulrich von meeting of April 27, 1269. Partnership

A partnership exists with the city Öhringen in Baden -Württemberg and the community Capriva del Friuli since 1995. Friendly relations existed since 1985 between the volunteer fire departments of meetings and Öhringen -Cappel.
