Trip hammer

A hammer mill or hammer mill is a blacksmith with a hammer driven by water power. The rotational movement of the water wheel causes the cam shaft via a periodic lifting of the hammer, which then breaks through the force of gravity on the held between the anvil and hammer part. The few existing today hammer forging, is where yet to be produced, mostly operated electrically.

History and Background

Hammer forging hammers and iron originated from the late Middle Ages. For the operation of a smithy forests had to guarantee the recovery of large quantities of charcoal. In addition, there had to be deposits of iron ore to allow short transport distances of the iron-containing rock to smelting in the area. Also arable land were important in the diet of many labor required.

The rich owners of hammer forging, especially along the present-day Bavarian and Austrian iron street Iron Road ( here called "Black Count " ), built next to her hammer forging representative mansions, the so-called hammer locks.

Many towns and districts are now named after forging hammer or hammer mills that have existed there over time.

In Switzerland, all 15 hammer mills have received.
