Tudor Watkins, Baron Watkins

Tudor Elwyn Watkins, Baron Watkins, of Glyntawe in the County of Brecon ( born May 9, 1903 in Abercrave, Powys, Wales, † November 2, 1983 in Brecknockshire ) was a British Labour Party politician, who for 25 years Member of the House of Commons and 1972 was due to the Life peerages Act 1958 as a life peer member of the House of Lords.

Life

Watkins, whose father was a Baptist deacon, began after the school in 1917 as a boy of fourteen his career as a miner and worked until 1925 in a coal mine in Wales. He was subsequently 1925-1933 worked as a professional secretary in the constituency office of the Labour Party of Breconshire and Radnorshire, before he was 1937-1948 Secretary General of the Association of Workers' Associations ( Association of Friendly Societies ) in Brecknockshire. After the end of World War II Watkins was first elected in the general election of July 5, 1945 as a Labour candidate in the constituency of Breconshire and Radnorshire for MPs in the House of Commons and was this up to the general election on June 18, 1970 almost 25 years long on. In the 1950s, he was one of the supporters of the Parliament for Wales Campaign, which fought for an independent Parliament in Wales. By Letters Patent of May 10, 1972 Watkins was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Watkins, of Glyntawe in the County of Brecon in peerage and was so until his death in the House of Lords as a member. His official introduction ( Introduction) as upper house member took place on June 7, 1972 with the support of Arthur Champion, Champion Baron and Thomas Jones, Baron Maelor.

After the reorganization of the counties of Wales Baron Watkins between 1974 and 1977 was the first Chairman of the County Council ( County Council ) of Powys and at the same time from 1974 to 1978 Chairman of the Committee of the Brecon Beacons National Park. In 1975, he was also Lord Lieutenant of Powys, and served in this post until 1978.
