Tyrnyauz
Tyrnyaus (Russian Тырныауз, Karachay- Balkar Тарны аууз ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino -Balkaria with 21,000 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).
Geography
The city is located in the Greater Caucasus around 60 km ( straight line ) southwest of the Republic capital Nalchik at the Baksan, a left tributary of the opening into the Terek Malka.
Tyrnyaus is the administrative center of the Rajons Elbrus.
Through the town, the road leads to the for Rajon associated tourist and alpine skiing center in the upper Baksan Valley ( below the Elbrus ).
History
Tyrnyaus emerged in the 1930s to replace the old Balkar village Girchoschan in connection with the development of a 1934 discovered tungsten and Molybdänerzlagerstätte. 1940 began production, the settlement was called at this time Nizhny Baksan ( " Lower Baksan ").
In 1955 the place under the present name of the city right (of Balkar tyrnyau usu for narrow gorge ).
2000, a significant part of the city was destroyed by a mudflow. Meanwhile, the damage was, however, largely eliminated.
