Ueckermünde Heath

The Ueckermünder Heath is a vast forest and heath area in the far north-eastern Germany. Large parts belong to the Nature Park In the Szczecin Lagoon. The eastern part of the area belongs to the Republic of Poland, under the name of Puszcza Wkrzańska.

Geography

The region is about 1,000 km ². In the north it is bounded by the Szczecin Lagoon, on the east by the Oder. To the west is the valley of the Great Meadow Friedlander the border, in the south about the line - Stettin Pasewalk. The Ueckermünder Heath is a lowland area, only a few points reach heights of over 20 m above sea level. NN (except roof mountains south of Hintersee 48 m). The forest area is crossed by the Uecker, of Pomerania and of Zarow. There are also numerous, protected moorland, particularly near the border with Poland. The marshes were the cause that the heath was first colonized relatively late in a large area. In the 17th century, it was predominantly colonists, the charcoal burners and glassworks docked. The frequent occurrence of bog iron was the basis for the metal processing enterprises mainly in Torgelow. In the middle of the area is a 50 km ² large military training area, which is used by the Bundeswehr ( army barracks in Torgelow and Eggesin ). Today the Ueckermünder Heath forestry, but also increasingly tourist has meaning. There are also a wide variety of flora and fauna. In the forests and bogs, among others breed Cranes, cry and eagles.
