UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying

The qualifying matches for the 2004 European Football Championship took place until 19 November 2003 of 7 September 2002.

50 of the 52 member countries of the UEFA played among themselves the 15 places in the 2004 European Cup. Kazakhstan took the youngest member country UEFA has not participated in the qualification. Portugal was set as the host country and completed the field of 16 finalists.

Qualification mode

The qualifications included 210 games, 200 of which were played in group mode. The 50 teams have been drawn against in the qualifying draw on 25 January 2002 in Porto each one of 10 groups. In each group, with five teams 20 games were played so that each team played against all of their opponents in the group each one home and one away match ( ie a total of eight games).

Direct qualified for the final round to the ten group winners of the group matches. The remaining five places played the ten runners-up in previously resolved relegation matches from among themselves.

Case of a tie between two teams after the group said the regulations that the team qualifies, who decided to directly compare for yourself. If no better team could be determined by this comparison, the goal difference and then counted the number of goals scored away from the directly opposite each other out encounters. If after these comparisons still no better team could be determined, then, all results of the group matches (comparison of goal difference, number of goals scored, away goals ) are used, and if then still should be equality, decided by the Fair Play ranking. As a final variation, a drawing of lots should have taken place.
