UEFA European Under-19 Championship

The UEFA U-19 European Football Championships ( in English: UEFA UNDER19 Championship ), short even called U-19 European Championship is a competition for European national teams of men under 19 years. The competition, which is organized by UEFA, will be played in a tournament since 1981. In addition, the biennial competition serves as qualifiers for U-20 World Cup.

History and mode

Since 1948 ( 1955 UEFA ) led by an international FIFA tournament for junior national teams. Were eligible players who had not yet reached the age of 19. In 1981 the tournament called " European Junior Championships ".

From 1981 to 1984 the tournament was held annually from 1986 to 1992 every two years, from 1993 back every year. The organizer was always automatically qualified. On the first tournaments attended 16 U-18 national teams. The four group winners first played after a semi-final and a final, the losers of the semi-final in the match for 3rd place From 1986, the tournament was played with eight teams, up to and including 1992, in the pure knock-out system, then with two groups of four teams, followed by 3rd place match of the group runners-up and the final of the group winners. Since 2003 there are additional semi-finals, but no match for 3rd place and 5th place only in 1994 was played, the person entitled to participate in the Junior World Cup in 1995.

In odd-numbered years, the championship also serves as a qualifier for the U-20 World Cup (until 2005: FIFA World Youth Championship ), where usually the top six teams qualify ( exceptions: 1995 five 1999 seven, 2005 and 2013 was also the Netherlands and Turkey as host and thus seventh European team qualifies ).

Until 1984, there was always at least one football team that participated for the first time at a U-18 European Football Championship finals. The highest number of first-time participants in 1981 achieved in the first edition. Below is a list of first-time participants, each with the flags and names then in force. In addition, countries are listed in parentheses, participating only with a new name for the first time at a European Championship. Nevertheless, these countries are sometimes referred to in the media as freshmen. These "newbies " but took over in the statistics of UEFA fully the results and titles of their predecessors - and, accordingly, their debut date. A special case are the Czech Republic and Slovakia, both of which are regarded as successors of Czechoslovakia at UEFA and both each took their title.
