Umeå Municipality

Umeå is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Västerbotten. The main town of the municipality is Umeå.

Through the community lead the European routes E4 and E12 and the main railway line Holmsund - Vännäs.

Geography

The municipality extends about 70 km along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia and up to 60 kilometers into the interior. Upstream from the coast are the archipelago of islands Holmöarna around Holmön in the Kvarken region. The following major towns ( tätorter ) belong to the community: Ersmark, Holmsund, Hörnefors, Innertavle, Obbola, Röbäck, Sävar, Sörfors, poles, Täfteå and Tavelsjö. The municipal area is divided by the River Ume älv which opens in Umeå in the Baltic Sea.

History

1622 the city of Gustav II Adolf was founded. 1888 burned much of the city down.

Economy

Umeå is a pronounced administrative and service community. Only about 12 percent of employees work in the industry. Industrial sites are Umeå, Holmsund and Obbola. In Holmsund also the harbor is a daily ferry service to Vaasa in Finland.

Attractions

Apart from the city of Umeå are still Klabböle and Sörfors northwest of the city to be mentioned. In Klabböle is the oldest power plant of Umeälvens that from 1899 to 1956 was in operation and is now a museum. In Sörfors is Sweden's largest hydro power plant, Stornorrfors. It can be visited in the summer. In mid-July, the Stornorrfors falling Dag organized, where the locks of the power plant dam are opened. There is also the longest fish ladder Sweden, which allows the salmon to pass through the power plant on their train upriver.

The Umeleden is a 30 km long road that can be done by car, bike or on foot along the Umeälven.
