Vilhelmina Municipality

Vilhelmina is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Lapland. The main town of the municipality is Vilhelmina. Through the community use the Imperial roads 45, 90 and the regional road 360

Geography

The community extends approximately 160 kilometers along the Ångermanälven from the Norwegian border to the southeast and is about half the size of Thuringia. A quarter of the municipal area are taken from the high mountains, where the Marsfjällen with a height of 1589 meters is the highest mountain. Numerous long narrow mountain lakes form the headwaters of the Ångermanälven. Even the densely forested foothills is crossed by numerous lakes and vast wetlands.

Economy

Forestry and reindeer husbandry in the northwest of the municipality are the traditional sectors of the economy. Tourism has increased in recent decades in importance. Saxnäs is an important tourist center.

Attractions

  • Fatmomakke, 110 kilometers northwest of Vilhelmina, is a Sami village church with over 100 Sami huts.
  • Stekenjokk, 140 kilometers northwest of Vilhelmina, is a former Grubenort - the pit, which lay in the high mountains, was closed in 1988.
  • Trappstegforsen, a waterfall, falling staircase similar on many levels (50 kilometers northwest of Vilhelmina )
  • Marsfjällets Nature Reserve
