The University of the Western Cape ( Afrikaans: Universiteit van Wes - Kaapland, English: University of the Western Cape), UWC short, is a state university in Bellville, a suburb of Cape Town in South Africa's Western Cape province.
The University of the Western Cape was established during the apartheid era in 1959 as a college for Coloureds and began teaching operation with 166 students at. 1970 received the University College status. After protests by students and staff of the first black rector was appointed in 1975, 1982, rejected the UWC officially apartheid from.
Organization
The UWC is headed by a Rector and Vice-Chancellor. To manage in addition include two Deputy Vice-Chancellor, three executive directors and the audit officer. The Registrar shall be representative and symbolic tasks; currently practicing Desmond Tutu from the office. The line is the University responsible, which sets the guidelines and is responsible for financial planning and academic affairs.
The university is located in the north of Cape Town on a campus and is divided into five regions: North, South, West, East and Central Campus. The UWC has seven faculties:

- Natural sciences
The faculties are divided into schools.
