The USS Helena (SSN -725 ) is a nuclear submarine of the Los Angeles-class. The patron of the boat is the city of Helena in Montana.

History

The Helena was commissioned in 1982 at Electric Boat and placed there in 1985 to Kiel. The construction of the boat lasted 15 months, followed by the final outfitting and initial testing. In July 1987, Helena was officially submitted to the United States Navy in service.

As of 11 May 1989, the Helen of Midway home, Pearl Harbor in Hawaii had to be towed because the transmission of their single shaft was broken and the screw could no longer drive. The first years were spent with the ship testing of cruise missiles and torpedoes

The year 2005 spent the Helena in the western Pacific and visited the ports of Sasebo and Yokosuka (both Japan ), Singapore, Guam ( Apra Harbor) and Saipan. Along with the battle group to the USS Kitty Hawk (CV -63 ) took the ship also participated in exercises.

Beginning of 2008 went Helena for six months on a ride in the Western Pacific, 2009, she participated in the exercise ICEX part under the Arctic ice cap. From late 2011, the submarine ran for six months in Central and South American waters.
